Becoming a Marathoner in 2019

I had a bucket list wish to complete a marathon in my lifetime-specifically by the time I am 40. So a couple weeks ago I registered for the Las Vegas Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon. I’m feeling very excited. I’m also feeling scared…well, terrified is probably the better word. How in the world am I going to be able to run 26.2 miles?! Training, of course…but I have a few challenges that others may not have…three children I will need to still take care of, a full time job, and other things in my life that can’t wait just because I’m training to run a long distance. Plus, I have had injuries in the past. I worry that this will happen again. But I also know I need to sign up for a half marathon and do other races during the year to get ready.

So what am I going to do? Seek out the help of others, of course. While part of me feels I know how to run and prepare for races-I’ve been running since I was 12, the bigger part of me knows I need to seek advice from others who are more knowledgeable and experienced. This is especially true with regard to the marathon. This is where my connections on social media have been so great!

On Instagram, I follow many runners, bodybuilders, exercise and nutrition enthusiasts, as well as people I know just living life and raising their children one day at a time. All of these people can and do serve as inspiration as I try to reach my goals in 2019. I have already started reading some E-books from a fantastic Instagram runner that was kind enough to share them with me! I have had people reach out to me to see if I would be interested in becoming a coach because they’ve found my page inspirational. In addition, I recently have had people I have known for years send me messages telling me how I’ve inspired them to set some goals in the new year.

I am very motivated by those that find me motivating, as well as those that are motivated to help me become a better runner-or even those posting their exercise plans and nutrition ideas, regardless of the specific health purpose (even if they aren’t a fan of running). Instagram really is an incredible platform that helps in my journey. However, without the support of my family and dear friends, I certainly wouldn’t be where I am today.

My husband encouraged me to sign up for the marathon in the first place, knowing full well the time and sacrifices he will probably be making to allow for me to train in 2019. My parents are always supportive, willing to watch our children when I do a race, or even when I train if my husband is unavailable. My husband’s side of the family is also very supportive of my running-which really means a lot! My family is truly the best!

Then there are my friends. The runners and non-runners are equally helpful and motivating as I go on this (what some may think crazy) running journey! Of course, I get helpful advice from the runners, and words of motivation from both! Either way, it’s helpful!

So I’m reading a couple E-books, and I’ve purchased two paperback books. I will try to elaborate on the details of those as I finish them. In addition, I need to work on my nutrition. If you follow me on Instagram (@irish_runner80) you will find that I haven’t been running as many miles the past couple of months and have concentrated more on strength training. This has resulted in me losing weight but gaining muscle!

It has been a pretty great transformation for me, but my heart is in running. I love running, and I’ve had this marathon goal in my head for a few years. It’s time to do it, but I’m afraid it might reverse the work I’ve done to get toned-especially as I’ve historically lost weight training for half marathons. That being the case, I’m pretty sure the full marathon will present a nutritional challenge! This is where I will need to seek the advice of a nutritionist and make sure I’m eating appropriately and balancing my strength training with my running in the correct way-because I also need to avoid injury!

So there you have it-my marathon goal for 2019. I will run my 6th half marathon in May, and plan to sprinkle in a few 10ks to keep the running going, but the big goal is that marathon in November! I’ll be sure to share this journey more frequently as I go along!

Happy running everyone!
